The beginnings of the Alliance can be traced to conversations
between the High
Point Community Foundation and the Community
Foundation of Greater Greensboro, which joined forces in
March 2002 to convene a discussion group on private sector
partnerships and education in Guilford County. The purpose
of this group was to consider forming an independent,
countywide organization to strengthen schools and to positively
impact learning for all Guilford County residents.
A Board of Directors was assembled
under the name of Guilford County Education Network and the Board
held its first meeting in August 2002. Over the course
of the next year, the Board formed its organizational and governance
structure, held “listen and learn” events to get
input from education related groups across the county, and
clarified the organization’s role: to promote
and support existing efforts (not to displace them) and to
develop complementary initiatives in the future.
In January 2005 Margaret B. Arbuckle, Ph.D. was hired as the Executive Director of the Guilford Education Alliance.
