What is the origin of organizations like Guilford Education Alliance?
Local organizations to support public education began in the early 1980s as Local Education Funds, referred to as LEFs.
What are Local Education Funds?
LEFs are organizations that work with, but are independent of, their local school systems. First established in the early 1980s, many of these organizations were initially known as education foundations. Their primary mission was to raise funds from the corporate sector to provide additional funding for urban public schools serving low-income and minority children.
How have Local Education Funds evolved?
While most LEFs are still involved in fundraising and mini-granting to some extent, the trend is for them to be increasingly involved in education advocacy and school reform. More information on Local Education Funds can be found on the Web site of the Public Education Network.
What does the Alliance do?
Our Strategic Plan calls for the Alliance to emerge as a trusted source of data and a valued convener of education stakeholders. Our overarching goal is that, by June 30, 2007, the Alliance will be firmly established as a premier independent resource for educational information and a vital driving force behind educational improvement in Guilford County.
Are you only concerned with K-12 public schools?
While the primary focus of the Alliance is on the Guilford County Schools, it also works with other educational institutions at all levels, taking a cradle-to-grave approach to education advocacy. We have a wealth of educational resources in our county, including eight colleges and universities and numerous early childhood programs, afterschool initiatives and continuing education options. We will do our part to facilitate the coordination of these programs into an enhanced continuum of lifelong learning opportunities for all Guilford County residents.
How are you funded?
The Alliance receives operating and project-related support from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the High Point Community Foundation, The Cemala Foundation, The Weaver Foundation and Duke Energy Corporation.
