The role of the Guilford Education Alliance is to promote
and support existing efforts (not to displace them) and to
develop complementary initiatives in the future. The
first of these complementary initiatives is the FOCUS Guilford project, designed to mobilize families
and communities in support of higher academic achievement for
all students through uniting families and schools as learning
partners and decision-making partners.
Below are other current initiatives:
DonorsChoose – A non-profit, national on-line service where teachers describe, and individuals fund, specific classroom projects they find compelling. A specific page is available just for Guilford County teachers and classrooms. Businesses, parents, and community members can donate some or the entire requested amount, and contributions are tax-deductible.
Principal for a Day - Principal For A Day is an event that provides an opportunity for corporate and community leaders to get a first-hand look at what Guilford County is doing to improve instruction in every classroom as well as to experience what is demanded of principals in their dual roles as managers and instructional leaders. Participants will see close up both the strengths of the county’s public schools and the challenges they face.
Education Leaders Institute – A multi-session institute that prepares citizens to assume an active and positive role in promoting and supporting a high quality school system by providing foundational information about community leadership and education/school issues.
Community Guide to the School Budget – A printed guide that is designed to introduce the public to the Guilford County Schools Budget and how it works.
Education Summit – An event in March 2006 during which local business and community leaders, educators, and parents convened to hear Dr. Sam Houston speak about educating our local workforce for 21st century jobs. They also participated in round table discussions on ways to improve schools and how to work together to create an environment where quality and high expectations for our students are the community norm.
Community Computer Labs Partnership Project - Computer labs in after school programs are networked with Guilford County Schools and hosting Success Maker software for students to use to assist with their homework.
