W
hat does AYP stand for?  Adequate Yearly Progress is determined by looking at the reading and mathematics test scores of students in grades 3 - 8 and in the 10th grade. Students must score Level 3 or Level 4 in order to "pass" the test.  Both individual schools and school districts are required to make Adequate Yearly Progress.

How do you know if a school or school district made Adequate Yearly Progress?

If the required percentage of students in your school or school district passes the test, then you will be notified that the AYP status is that the goal was "Met".  If your school or school district does not meet the goals, you will be notified that the AYP goal was "Not Met". Each subgroup in each school and district must meet the goal in order for the school or district to "Make AYP".  Here are the "achievement goals" used to determine the AYP status for North Carolina Schools and districts:

How does NCLB define student groups in a school?

The student groups (referred to as subgroups) are:

  • The School as a Whole
  • White
  • Black
  • Hispanic
  • Native American
  • Asian
  • Multiracial
  • Economically Disadvantaged Students
  • Limited English Proficient Students
  • Students With Disabilities

Most schools do not have all groups represented in their school. There must be 40 or more students in a school or district taking the test in order for that student group to be identified as a subgroup for AYP. If one or more of the student groups does not make AYP, then the school or district is placed in the status of AYP "Not Met".   If a school or district didn't actually hit the required percentage of Level 3 or 4 students, but is close to the goal, or has made significant gains in test scores within a student group, they can be considered to have "Met" AYP.

When you see a report of test scores of the whole school or school district, that is considered aggregated data.

When you see a report of test scores that breaks out the scores of each student group, that is considered disaggregated data.
